Xcaret from Cancun: Tickets, Transport, and Which Option to Choose
Xcaret is the park that defines the Riviera Maya's "eco-archaeological" concept: part water park, part wildlife sanctuary, part open-air museum of Mexican culture. You float down underground rivers in the morning, watch jaguars and sea turtles at midday, and end the night in a theater with 300 performers staging the country's history. It is about 75 km south of Cancun — roughly an hour — and a full day here is one of the best-rated experiences in the region.
Here is how to get there, which ticket to buy, and how to make the most of the day.
What Xcaret actually is
The park occupies a cove where underground rivers meet the sea. The main attractions included in every ticket:
- Underground rivers: three routes where you float in a life jacket through caves and open channels — the park's signature experience.
- The inlet: a natural seawater lagoon for snorkeling, with gear included or rentable.
- Wildlife areas: an aviary, butterfly pavilion, jaguar and puma enclosures, a sea turtle pool, manatee lagoon, and a coral reef aquarium.
- Beach and pools: a small protected beach, natural pools, and hammocks strung over the water.
- Cultural attractions: a replica Mayan village, a hacienda, a Mexican cemetery, the Papantla flying-men show, and rotating traditional performances.
- Mexico Espectacular: the night show — a two-hour production covering pre-Hispanic ball games, the conquest, and regional music. Included in all tickets and genuinely the highlight of the day.

Ticket options
Basic ticket
- Typical price: $120–140 USD (online advance prices are lower than at the gate; kids about half).
- Includes: the park, the rivers, shows, and Mexico Espectacular.
- Excludes: food, drinks, lockers, towels, and snorkel gear deposit.
Xcaret Plus
- Typical price: $160–185 USD.
- Adds: a buffet meal at one of several restaurants, access to the Plus Area (nicer lockers, private changing rooms, snorkel gear without deposit), and often a second beverage at lunch.
- Worth it? For most visitors, yes — buying a buffet inside separately costs almost the difference anyway, and the Plus Area saves real time.
Packages with transport or other parks
Tours from Cancun bundle admission with round-trip hotel transport ($30–40 USD more than the ticket alone) — worth it if you are not renting a car. Xcaret also sells multi-park packages with Xel-Ha, Xplor, or Xenses at a discount if you plan to visit more than one.

Getting there from Cancun
- Park bus (included in tour packages): the easiest option — pickup at your hotel, drop-off at the entrance.
- ADO bus + taxi/colectivo: bus to Playa del Carmen or Tulum, then a local colectivo — cheapest but slowest.
- Rental car: free parking at the park; the drive is an easy hour on Highway 307.
- Taxi: roughly $70–90 USD each way from the Hotel Zone — only sensible for a group.

Video by Meko ValentinoHow to plan the day
- Arrive at opening (8:30 AM) and go straight to the underground rivers — they get busier by midday, and the river float takes 40–50 minutes.
- Midday: wildlife areas, aquarium, and lunch — the hottest hours are best spent under cover.
- Afternoon: inlet snorkeling, the beach, the hacienda area, and the flying-men show.
- Evening: stay for Mexico Espectacular (starts around 7:00 PM). Many visitors leave before it and miss the best part — plan your transport back accordingly; tour buses wait for the show.
Practical tips
- Wear a swimsuit all day and bring water shoes — you will be in and out of the water constantly.
- Only biodegradable sunscreen is allowed; park staff can confiscate regular bottles at the entrance and return them when you leave.
- Lockers and towels are rentable, but Plus includes better facilities — another reason to upgrade.
- The park is big; comfortable sandals beat flip-flops, and a waterproof phone pouch beats juggling a camera.
- Book online in advance — gate prices are higher and the park can sell out in peak season.
Travel tip: If you only do one underground river, do the first (Blue River). It is the longest and the most dramatic — and drop off in the mangrove section is where the best photos are.

Conclusion
For most visitors, Xcaret Plus with transport included is the right call: it solves the food, the facilities, and the ride home in one booking. Arrive early, do the rivers first, and — whatever you do — stay for the night show. Xcaret is a long day, but it is one of the few tourist attractions that actually delivers on its own advertising.
